Stellar Structure and Evolution

The study of the structure of stars and of their evolution has a long tradition in Padova. Extensive grids of evolutionary stellar models, encompassing the whole range of masses and metallicities, have been computed and are periodically upgraded by incorporating the latest input physics. The models are published on the web, together with the isochrones and tables for a large range of photometric systems. We model the thermally pulsing AGB phase with special attention. This is one of the most uncertain stages of the stellar evolution theory, but it has a strong impact on the properties of intermediate age stellar populations.

The effects of weakly interacting massive Dark Matter particles (WIMPs) on the collapse and evolution of the first stars in the Universe are modeled to understand the role of the annihilation of DM on the fragmentation and mass of the first stars.
Observational data on stellar photometry and spectroscopy are collected and maintained up-to-date in two databases. The ADPS documents, calibrates and homogenizes more than 200 existing photometric systems; the ADSD, a database of spectroscopic databases, documents and homogenizes the existing databases of stellar spectra, in the UV, optical and IR spectral ranges.

Two projects for testing the stellar models are being developed at the OAPd. In one program we use the Asiago telescope to derive masses and radii of eclipsing binaries, whose properties are compared to stellar evolution tracks. Another program deals with asteroseismological studies, aimed at probing the stellar interior, using SARG at the TNG.

Complementary projects in the field of stellar evolution include the tomography of expanding nebulae to reconstruct their tri-dimensional structure and mass loss in late evolutionary phases.
